Slightly more than one half of Hungary's landscape consists of flat to rolling plains of the Pannonian Basin: the most important plain regions include the Little Hungarian Plainin the west, and the Great Hungarian Plainin the southeast. The highest elevation above sea levelon the latter is only 183 metres (600 ft).


In general, winters in Hungary are cold, cloudy and damp or windy, and summers are warm - sometimes very hot. July and August are the hottest months (average temperature 26°C) and January the coldest (-4°C).
